The first thing I noticed about Party Poker qualifier Ary Avnet was the HUGE chip stack in front of him. With two players engaged in a blind-vs.-blind confrontation over a substatial pot, Ary took the opportunity to stand up, stretch his legs, and fill me in on his road to the WSOP.

Ary earned his way into the Main Event via a freeroll tournament. “I had to beat out 7,000 players just to get here, now I just have to beat 8,000 more” he said with a smile. The law student from Lansing, MI made a huge comeback yesterday after being knocked down to only 2000 in chips.

“I pushed it all in with A4 and cracked pocket kings,” he said. “And just now, I doubled up within the last two hands. I took a 40K pot with QQ.”

Playing as “raist39” on Party Sihoki , Ary is sitting comfortably on a stack approaching 100,000.

Exit Stories: Sean Wilde

Short stacked most of the day and sitting at the table with poker pro Tom McEvoy, Sean Wilde said his first WSOP was a tough one.

“I was at a tight table,” he said, “and I couldn’t get anything going.”

His WSOP appearance was short lived when he was beat by a pair of aces.

“I needed more chips,” he said. “I tried to make a move on someone and it didn’t work.”

From Bristol, Penn., Sean paid $6 for his seat at the WSOP when he won a satellite tournament leading him to an online qualifying tournament. Placing in a $215 qualifier, Sean and his girlfriend, Tiffany Brett headed out for their first time in Las Vegas.

“It was one of the best experiences in my life,” he said. “Playing this tournament is an overwhelming experience and there is no way to prepare for the actual circus that it is…it’s easy to forget what got you there.”

Sean said he plans to play on PartyPoker and other online sites to get back to the WSOP in 2007 for another run.

Charlie Ng

Charlie Ng is my choice for “Up and Coming Young Player to Watch”. He was the run-away Best All Around player at the WPT events in Reno back in March. You might know him better as the most frequent dealer on Celebrity Poker Showdown, which films at the Palms here in Las Vegas. Charlie is a regular dealer at the Palms.

Today Charlie began Day Two with 8,675 and is so often the case with a Day Two short stacks, it was a late hand on Monday night that crippled Charlie. We spoke just before the cards were in the air and he told me that to a rag, rag, rag board the other player made what had to be a continuation bet with AK, so Charlie moved him all-in with his pocket pair and still the player called off his last 6K and sure enough tosses over AKo. You know the rest, King on the turn and Charley is down to under 9K to start Day Two. A perfect read and a terrible ending.

Charlie was patient today. He played only one hand but slowly got blinded down on a very aggressive pre-flop table. As he passed under 5K, he got up from the table and told me:

“I will move with AT or any pair but I’m not giving in here. There is still time to make a move and get some chips back.”

Here are 10 things you should avoid doing at a Casino:

1) Don’t try to buy in or cash out while a game is in play. Wait until between hands after the dealer has paid out any bets from the previous round. Ask for change and place your cash or chips on the table, rather then handing them directly to the dealer.

2) Don’t make a mess out of your chips. When making a bet, do not splash all your chips out on the table; gently place your ships on the table in a stack. When betting with chips of mixed denominations, stack your chips so that the highest denomination is on the bottom and the lowest is on top. Doing so makes it easier for dealers to count your chips, give proper change, and keep an eye out for cheaters that may be trying to “top off” a bet.

3) Don’t drink too much. We are all out to have a good time, but know your limit so you aren’t having fun at the expense of others. Drunk people tends to slow games down, make annoying conversation, and kill the overall mood at a table.

4) Limit yourself to one machine at a time when a particular bank of machines is busy. Playing multiple machines at the same time does not improve ones odds, so if it is busy, leave room for someone else to play. For table games, do not take up extra chairs or space around a particular table so that there is room for others to play.

5) Don’t forget to tip your dealer, EVEN IF YOU LOSE. Most dealers, like many other service based industries, make minimum wage + tips. My general philosophy is to tip 2/3 based on service, and 1/3 based on my winnings (if any).  Not tipping a dealer because you lost is the equivalent of not tipping a perfectly good waitress/waiter because you didn’t like the flavor of the soup that you ordered.

6) If you smoke cigarettes, try to be respectful of others around you. Extinguish an dispose of your butts in an ashtray, and exhale smoke upward rather than towards the other players and dealers around you.

7) Don’t forget to use hand signals. Casinos are loud and noisy places and it may be hard for a dealer to hear what you want to do. Hand signals are easy to interpret, and can be reviewed by video footage if there is a question about a particular play.

8) For games in which cards are dealt face up, don’t touch them. In games which you are allowed to touch the cards, only do so with one hand. Touching the cards with multiple hands is a signal to the casinos that you may be trying to cheat by bending or “marking” specific cards in the a deck.

9) Don’t berate a player for the way the played their hand. Blackjack players are particularly notorious for doing so, thinking that “unnecessary hitting” throws off the game by disrupting the order that cards are dealt. While this may be true, unconventional judi dadu online plays are just as likely to positively influence a game as they are to negatively influence it. Besides, players who blame others for their losses should not be gambling in the first place.

10) Resist the urge to give unsolicited advice. Not everyone is interested in playing “basic strategy” and they have every right to play their own game, even if it may not be an optimal strategy. Let people make their own fun.

There are a variety of ways to make money through your blog, but today we are going to cover advertising and ways to make money through your blog by serving ads from ad networks.

Firstly we’ll cover a little terminology that you may encounter working with ad networks, and secondly we’ll look at some of the more popular ad networks.

Terminology

Publisher – that’s you. As the author of a blog you are a publisher.

Inventory – are the ads that the ad network displays.

Ad units – These refer to the different types of ads which appear online, including banners, interstitials, pop-ups, skyscrapers and text links.

Clicks – The number of click throughs having occurred as a result of a user clicking on a banner and being redirected to an advertiser’s page.

Cost Per Click (CPC) – This term refers to an amount of money paid by advertisers for each click through on their ad. Prices can vary greatly.

Cost Per Thousand (CPM) – CPM is the figure advertisers will pay publishers per thousand impressions (the ‘M’ in this case deriving from ‘Mille’, the Latin word for ‘thousand’ – confusing I know) of an ad.

Click-through rate (CTR) – Click-through rate or CTR refers to the percentage of impressions that results in a click through. For example if an ad was clicked on 64 times out of the  1,000 times it is displayed the CTR would be 6.4%.

eCPM – Effective Cost Per Mille tells a publisher what he or she would have received if they sold advertising inventory on a CPM basis.

Impressions – This refers to the number of times a banner ad has been shown to users. It should be noted that caching and page load errors can lead to inaccurate impression counts.

Remnant space – some ad networks allow you to supply ad code from other ad networks you work with so that in situations where they don’t have ad inventory to display they will display your remnant ad.

Ad networks

There are hundreds, if not thousands of ad networks out there to choose from so it can be a little overwhelming in selecting which ad network to go with. Some are better than others to deal with. So we’ll give you a run down of the more popular ad networks to get you started.

Google Adsense

Google Adsense is probably the first, and most obvious choice when it comes to advertising. Sign up is simple and implementation is easy. While the amount of money you make from Adsense might not be as high as some other networks, it’s a nice supplement, and with effective ad placement and a decent amount of page views you can make a tidy amount. The other benefit of signing up with Google Adsense is that you can use your Adsense ads as remnant ads (backup ads) when other ads you work with don’t have inventory.

One thing to be aware of with Adsense is that you will only receive payment once your revenue reaches the cut off threshold for your currency. For Australia this is $150.

BlogHer

I’m a member of BlogHer, and they’ve worked really well for me. One thing to be aware of is that BlogHer only serves ads to visitors to your site that reside in the US, so if your US readership is small you will mainly be displaying remnant ads, such as Google Adsense.

Federated Media

If you are a reader of  blogs such as Dooce, Boing Boing and Apartment Therapy you might have already seen ads from the Federated Media network. They specialise in three main areas – living, business and technology.

Foodie BlogRoll

Foodie Blog Roll is a specialist ad network in the food arena.

Martha’s Circle

Martha’s Circle specialises in working with food and lifestyle blogs and tend to work with popular bloggers.

SAY Media

If you’re a reader of The Kitchen or 101 Cookbooks you’ve likely seen ads from the SAY Media network. Like Federated Media they specialise in Living, Technology and Style related blogs and only work with bloggers who have over 100,000 unique visitors per months.

Nuffnang

Nuffnang is an ad network that specialises in working with bloggers in Australia and Asia.

Placement is key

I use Google Adsense on my blog, along with BlogHer with some success. Although this didn’t happen until I experimented with placement. Placement of your ads is key to earning money. For me the most successful placements are above my website header, towards the top and middle of my sidebar and below my post before my comment form. This may vary for you so experiment and see what works with your blog design.

Also be aware that your ad revenue earnings will fluctuate from day to day, depending on the time of the year (January being a particularly low period) and on more significantly will depend on your website traffic. So try a placement configuration out for a month before considering whether it works and tweak as necessary.

It’s true … Vanessa Rousso is officially a bad-asslette. She did indeed win the $5k Borgata event — a $285k payday. The biggish-name pros she outlasted at the final table include Joe Sebok and Hasan Habib.

The Cooler

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ–We’re down below 140 players. Joe Brooks isn’t one of them. The local pro from Egg Harbor, who situs online won the $2,500 NL event here at the Borgata, got bounced a little while ago. But he wasn’t felled by cards.

In today’s Press of Atlantic City, there was a story about Brooks, two other local pros (Matt Stout and Matt Glantz), and Cyndy Violette. All four players were alive this morning. All four players are gone this afternoon.

“As soon as I saw the article, I knew we were screwed,” Joe Brooks says. “I’m going to that woman’s house.”

The story was written by Elaine Rose. I don’t think she’s loved.

“She’s the kiss of death,” Stout says.

I wonder if they’ll put her in the bathroom like Eddie Mush.

LAKE TAHOE, NV–A little update from the $500+$50 NLH tournament I mentioned earlier. Heads up with Edmund Liu (right), slot gacor Nutz Rafael Perez went all in with A-9 after the flop came K-10-9. Lui’s A-K gave him top pair. A queen came on the turn giving each a possible straight, but a blank card on the river gave Liu victory.

For a small event there were definitely some characters like deli owner Karen Bochenek who raced from her final table debut to the next tournament a few minutes later. Silently sipping his neat Chivas Regal was Nick Loader. The day before the finals, loader bluffed Bochenek bringing her to the final table with a low stack disadvantage. We also had returning situs online champion Clint Baskin who early on looked as though he might regain the title, but fell when his K-J lost to Liu’s pocket 9s. Finally, our second place winner, boistrous, colorful Rafael Perez who knocked Bockenek and her pocket 3s out of the tournament with his third round of pocket aces. Perez held top pocket pairs seven times that day; five of them were aces. Talk about lucky.
